Y5: In the autumn term we spent a lot of time using our knowledge of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 or 1000 to convert between units of measurement. We used the idea 'big to small, multiply it all' to know whether to multiply or divide (a larger unit converted to a smaller one = multiply). For example to convert from 4.5metres to centimetres you need to know that 1m = 100cm, then 'big to small' (metres are larger than centimetres) so 4.5 x 100 = 450cm.

Today you will be revising the process of x by 10, 100 and 1000. Remember the number of zeros tells you how many places to move each digit to the left. Multiplying by ten and by ten again is the same as multiplying by 100 so use tricks like this to help you!

Remember when you are comparing numbers (using < or >) the arrow always points towards the smaller value.
