Today's learning will focus on: adding and subtracting 1's, 10's, 100's and 1000's.
Remember your place value columns.
The number 4,235
There are 4 thousands (4,000), 2 hundreds (200), 3 tens (30) and 5 ones (5).
Knowing your place value columns and being able to separate them will help you with this lesson.
Add 20 to 4,235
You can easily do this mentally when you focus on that particular place value column, knowing that you do not need to cross boundaries (move into the following place value column- in this case the hundreds).
30 + 2 tens (20) = 50 so... 4,235 + 20 = 4,255

Note to parents: I've also attached a place value grid. Sometimes in class, if your child isn't secure at identifying the value of each digit within a number, I give them a place value grid to help them with their work. They usually place the number correctly on the grid and this helps them access the question. They also use counters to help add to that specific column. This way, they have something physical. You could use coins or other items around the house to mimic counters. You needn't print out this resource and can create your own on a piece of paper.
