Y5: Today you will be consolidating your work on multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000. You will complete some work on calculating with multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. The video will show you that this techniques uses partitioning. For instance to calculate: 7 x 50, you can do 7 x 5 = 35, then 35 x 10 = 350(you are breaking 50 into '5 x 10').

We have done this often in class during intervention questions. For instance to complete a question such as 60 x 50, you have been taught to do 6x5 =30, then 30 x 100 (add the two zeros) giving you 3,000. 


When you come onto questions involving division there are some further shortcuts that might help. For instance in q8 for 4200 ÷ 200, divide both numbers by 100 (knock off 2 zeros for each number) giving you 42 ÷ 2 = 21.

Y4: After working on dividing by 10, today we are dividing by 100. You know already that this means moving each digit 2 places to the right. Today's video is really informative and revises some key place value knowledge and reminders such as 1 thousand = 10 hundreds. Keep this in mind. Some questions mention using base ten; if you need to, you could draw your thousands, hundreds etc. Good luck!
