Year 5 Trip to the Openzone 4.5.22

Year 5 had an amazing time at the Openzone learning how to use block coding. First we had to follow some very complicated instructions to make our Lego robots. (We were the first class to use a new Lego kit called Spike)

Using the Spike Lego Kit, we constructed a breakdancing robot. This needed 2 motors and several connections to the computer. We then programmed several dance moves and some music and then watched the show. It was great fun, but also needed a lot of perseverance.

We also used another Lego kit called WeDo. For this kit, we made a robot which could change colours, move backwards and forwards and also make sounds. All of this was achieved using block coding, where the instructions are clicked together, just like Lego. We learnt about the repeat tool and found this extremely handy.

In the afternoon, we used Sphero Balls. This again used block coding, but we could also control them via an app on the iPads using a control pad. Our final activity with them was a relay race!  Phew. what a busy day we had!

Well done, everyone for a super day.
