Year 6

November

This month we have continued to develop our knowledge of the four operations in maths by using formal written methods for both multiplication and division. We have also tackled a range of difficult problems applying these skills.

In English, we have started to write our own short narratives which are set during the Blitz. We have really enjoyed creating our own characters and plots. We can't wait to share our final versions!

In art, we have been learning about macro photography and producing some of our own pieces of art using this style. These are on display around school. Also in French, we have been learning about 'families'. We have been learning how to say members of the family such as sisters and brothers.

October

October has certainly been a busy but very productive month! In year 6, we have continued to further our understanding of number, place value and formal methods for addition and subtraction. We have built upon our previous learning by using numbers up to 10, 000, 000 to solve problems and reason with.

In English, we have used a range of WWII based novels to write creatively and for a range of purposes. We held discussions based on our book 'Friend or Foe' and used a range of figurative language when writing descriptively.

We have also had lots of fun in our other subjects, too! In science, we have been learning all about light. We created periscopes to further our knowledge and understanding of reflection. In geography, we identified some of the human and physical features of counties in the UK that were both a target during WWII and reception areas for evacuees.

September

Welcome back to a new (and final) year at Jarrow Cross! All of the Year 6 team are happy to be back and are ready for an exciting year ahead.

We have made a fantastic start to the school year and the Year 6 children have been excellent role models and representatives for our school. We started the term by reading 'Our Class is a Family' where we learnt a little more about our class members and teachers. We then produced a range of graphs to represent the different data shown within our class family.

We have then started to learn about our topic 'WWII'. We have began reading our class novel- Friend or Foe- and have started to investigate the causes of the war.
