Value in Everyone

Year 2

April

What a lovely start to April with an amazing Victorian Day. First, we put on a concert for our families and sang lots of lovely songs such as

March

We are back to school and refreshed after half-term.

The first week was packed full of fun with World Book Day and the girls taking part in a national girls football event with Vicky from South Shields Football Club.

In science this half term, we are learning the importance of keeping our bodies healthy through exercise and a healthy diet.

In English, we have been using a book called Lights on Cotton Rock by David Litchfield. We have studied the character of Heather and the alien from the story as well as thinking about the setting. We then magpied ideas from our previous narrative unit to write an alternative ending.

Our maths this month covered lots of work with fractions. We looked at finding a half, a quarter and a third of shapes, pictures and amounts.

February

This month has been a busy one!

In maths we've used the play money in class to work out lots of addition and subtraction problems, plus counting how much money we have. We wished that it was  real money!

We have also been working  on our 2, 5 10 and 3 times table, so get practising at home on Times Table Rockstars (TTR) and see if you can improve your rock star status. If you have forgotten your log in for home, please message your teacher on Dojo.

In English, we have used a brilliant book called The Great Stink: How Joseph Bazalgette Solved London's Poop Pollution Problem which is by Colleen Paeff as a stimulus for our writing.  It has lots of information about cholera and how many Victorians thought that bad odours called miasmas were responsible for spreading illness.
In PE, we have worked with Laura from Durham Cricket Club. We have learnt batting and fielding techniques such as the overarm throw. We certainly have some children with an eye for the game with the ball being hit with some power!
Some of our Year 2 children represented the school in the Key Stage 1 Gymnastics competition, placing 4th overall out from 19 teams which was amazing!

Happy New Year everyone!

Year 2 have got 2025 off to a flying start in English with the book, Grandad's Secret Giant by David Litchfield. We have used this book and its beautiful illustrations as a stimulus to write our own stories using descriptive language and vocabulary.

In maths, we have moved on to multiplication and division using lots of manipulatives to help us explore strategies for problem solving and reasoning.

We had local historian, Richard, in school to tell us all about The Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle. We used drama to help understand what happened on the night October 6th, 1854. He brought in lots of artefacts for us to explore from the Victorian times and discussed the jobs people did in those days.

In science, we have been investigating how animals, including humans change over time.

In DT this term, we are learning how to sew a running stich. We will be using this new skill to create a lovely gift for a special March celebration (shhh, don't tell Mum!).

December

Mrs Watson's favourite month of the year!

This month we have worked hard preparing for our show, 'Hey Ewe!' but we managed to sneak away to the Customs house to watch a pantomime 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'. We had a great time!

We have been so busy creating our Christmas cards and calendars for our family and wrote some fantastic Christmas  poetry.

In RE, we have learnt about the importance of light at Christmas. We made our own Christingle and explored the parts used to make and what they represent.

We had a lovely time at our Christmas party, where we wore all things sparkly and festive, played party games and had a visit from a very special guest! Merry Christmas everyone!

November

What a busy month! We have started a new book all about a girl called Anna Hibiscus who lives in Africa. It contains some short stories and we have read Anna Hibiscus on Holiday and Anna Hibiscus Sells Oranges. We have used the book to look at a character profile, complete a book review and finally creating a new story based on what we have learnt about the books. We are getting very good at adding expanded noun phrases to improve our writing and adding detail.

In maths, we have covered 2- and 3-D shapes and are now looking at adding 2-digit numbers and will be introduced the column method whilst still using lots of equipment to help our understanding. I think our favourite lesson this month was in Religious Education where we are learning about the Jewish Passover and we got to try some of the types of food that many Jewish people would eat during Passover.

We have started our Kidsafe lessons and know the importance of having several trusted grownups we can go to if we have yukky feelings.

In History, we have learnt about Nelson Mandela and how he made an impact on the world, especially in South Africa where he campaigned to end apartheid.

In PE, we have started gymnastics and have learnt how to do teddy bear rolls and some children will attend a gymnastics competition next year.

Finally, we have started our rehearsals for our Christmas production next month.

October

We have settled in well to our new year group and enjoyed a fantastic trip to Northumberland College Zoo where we saw some African animals and held some snakes and reptiles.

In English, we have been working hard writing letters and diary entries based on the book Meerkat Mail

In maths, we have been continuing to extend our learning in place value and can partition numbers into tens and ones.

We are loving our geography work this term as we are using atlases and maps to look at the world. We have looked at where the continents are and what they are called; Plus, we are comparing hot and cold places in the world.

In art, we have created some pieces in the style of African Artist, Stephen Njenga, using bright, bold colours. We have also created our own maps to use as a stimulus in our art lessons this term.

September

Welcome to a brand new year in Year 2 at Jarrow Cross. We are very pleased to welcome you all to this year group. We have had an excellent start to the new year and are looking forward to lots of lovely activities this month, as well as our  trip to the zoo next month.

Our topic this term is called Amazing Africa and we have begun our English lessons with a story called Handa's Surprise. We have been using adjectives to describe the delicious fruits in this story.

In maths, we always start the year off with looking at place value. We will use a variety of different equipment to help partition and compare numbers numbers to 100.

In RE we are learning about why Moses is special to Jewish people. In our science lessons we are looking at living things and their habitats. Geography will cover learning about the continents, the North and South Poles and whether we'd like to live in a hot or cold climate. Mrs Watson will be teaching dance in PE and Miss Glen will be teaching Computing - Looking at IT around us.

We have introduced Peer Massage to the children. We do this after lunch time as an aid to help with transition from the play ground to the classroom before we start work in the afternoon. The children are really enjoying this and look forward to the chill time. We ask permission before placing our hands on each other's shoulders and carry out some massage techniques on the head, shoulders and back. Some of the children have already said they have been giving massages at home; we hope you have enjoyed it!
