Curriculum

Our Reception curriculum has been carefully planned to offer the children at Jarrow Cross a range of stimulating learning experiences. Children take part in engaging activities which support all aspects of their development and give them a strong foundation for their school journey. Adaptive teaching strategies are used to ensure all children are able to access our curriculum. We scaffold children’s development in seven areas of learning, as per the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). These are:

 

Physical Development;

Personal, Social and Emotional Development;

Communication and Language;

Literacy;

Mathematics;

Understanding the World; and

Expressive Arts and Design.

 

The curriculum is accessed in a range of ways by the children, including:

 

carpet times with teaching input;

small group activities;

interactions with adults during child-initiated learning time;

independent exploration of the learning environment; and

enrichment activities, such as trips and visitors.

 

Children are assessed when they start school using the Reception Baseline Assessment, which is a statutory assessment that helps staff to form an understanding of each child’s starting point. This is used alongside transition information from nurseries and discussion with parents, as well as information gathered by staff as they get to know the children in the Autumn term. Formative and summative assessment takes place informally throughout the year to support the teacher to plan the most suitable next steps for every child. The Development Matters non-statutory guidance is used to support staff understanding of how children typically learn and develop.

 

At the end of the Reception year, each child is assessed against the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Profile. This information is shared with parents and Year 1 teachers as part of the children’s transition.
