LOOKING AT THE BIGGER PICTURE
Whilst we wore something spotty and raised money for Children in Need, we explored the bigger picture: poverty.
We discussed what poverty is and challenged misconceptions such as certain parts of the world are poor and all people live in poverty. We then researched the facts and statistics about poverty in the UK and our local area.
We explored the quote, 'We are not all in the same boat. We are in the same storm. Some of us are on superyachts. Some of just have one oar.’ We acknowledged that whilst raising a large amount of money annually is helpful it doesn't end poverty, we looked at what we could do day to day to help reduce poverty.
We also learnt that Children in Need isn't just about raising money for poverty, but also to help tackle loneliness, mental health, young carers, those with medical needs and disabilities etc too. We then looked at ways we could support those individuals other than raising money. For example, hosting comedy nights for Young Carers; make a community centre that hosts events to find friends and share similar hobbies and interests; and a restaurant specifically for homeless people where supermarkets donate their left over food.
