In September Year 1 were very busy getting used to our new classrooms. We learnt the story of the Gingerbread Man and can retell it off by heart! We have done lots of investigating in numeracy ready for our exciting learning in Year 1!
In October We went on an autumnal walk to St Peter's Church in Jarrow. We looked at the different features of the church and some of us had a turn of the church organ! On the way back we walked through the grassy park to collect some autumn leaves to create some lovely pictures back at school.
We also took part in our school's Harvest Festival service where our friends and family came to watch us.
We have had a great first half term in Year 1!
In November the children have worked very hard in maths using part-whole models and number lines to do addition. They have really enjoyed taking on maths challenges and have also enjoyed Julia Donaldson's story 'Room on a Broom' where they have written their own broomstick adventure!
We enjoyed a trip to Newcastle on the metro to see The Snowman at Fenwick's window and a visit to Greggs for a festive cupcake. We used a map of the Metro Network to work out how many stops we will need to travel, we have some avid navigators in Year 1!
In December Year 1 have had a very busy month! We went to the new Urban Factory in Hebburn to take part in a Gymnastics festival. We had great fun trying out all of the new equipment.
We went to see the pantomime -Beauty and the Beast at the Customs House. We have had lots of fun working around the story of The Snowman, making lots of Christmas crafts and singing Christmas songs. We really enjoyed learning how to sew when creating our snowman hand puppets. We performed our nativity too and all of our friends and family came to watch us.
In January, Year 1 have been busy learning about every day materials. We have been investigating what they are made of and exploring their properties. We have used the weather to create some winter inspired pictures, where we have mixing paint to make darker and lighter shades.
We have been reading the story Stickman in our Literacy lessons and using the text as a stimulus for our writing and created some stick art.
Unfortunately, due to the weather, our trip was cancelled to the Discovery Museum and has been rearranged for March.
In February, Year 1 had visitors into school, teaching us all about road safety. We now know how to cross the road safely and correctly. In our topic lessons, we have enjoyed looking at toys from the past. We have been learning about the Royal Family and looking at toys that Prince William may have played with. In our number work, we have continued to learn our number bonds to 10 and how these can help us when we are adding.
In March, Year 1 went to the Discovery Museum. We travelled by Metro and then walked to the Museum. The Museum was lots of fun, with lots of interesting old toys to look at. In class, we read the book Lost in the Toy Museum, which is all about Bunting, the old toy cat and we got to meet him at the Museum. We used our trip to help us to write lots of stories about Bunting. We have also written our own stories about being lost in a toy Museum. Also, some of Year 1 took part in a multi-skills competition, which involved lots of different fun activities.
In April, Year 1 went on the school Easter Holy Trail. We listened carefully, and learned all about the events of Holy Week. We made Easter cards to celebrate Easter and, of course, ate some Easter chocolate eggs! We also enjoyed having our parents and carers come into school for our Easter Coffee Morning.
In May Year 1 had a visitor from Warburtons. We all learned how to make a healthy sandwich. We also visited the dentist. The dentist let some of us sit in the chair! We promised to try and brush our teeth twice a day! Also, some of our parents/carers came into school to help design an Elmer for a local competition.
