Year 6

December

We finished learning about our topic- WWII- this month and learnt all about the celebrations of VE Day. We had fun learning some celebratory songs in our music lessons and designed our own VE Day street parties! We also had lots of fun in Science learning about the human circulatory system - we even made our own model blood!

We were also lucky enough to complete a careers workshop where we discovered the roles and careers at a local windfarm. We had to create our own 'energy efficient' cities.

We obviously also had lots of fun with our Christmas celebrations including our Christmas party!

November

We started this month with our fantastic residential trip to Thurston. Children and staff had a wonderful time conquering their fears and trying new activities! We heard the food wasn't too bad either! We also had fun back at school with pizza making (and eating), crafts including making keyrings and magnets and even a trip to the park!

We were also lucky enough to go to watch the production of 'War Horse' at the theatre. We all thought it was amazing and were thoroughly impressed with the animations form the animals!

We have continued working hard in all subjects this month, too! We have started learning about fractions in maths and have completed a variety of text types in English including newspaper articles and poems.

October

We have continued to learn about WWII this month. The History Bloke came to visit our classes and we heard all about the story of Alfie Palmer and his family. We investigated lots of primary and secondary sources of evidence  and used our inference skills to draw conclusions about the family.

We were also lucky enough to visit the Theatre Royal to see award winning poet - Valerie Bloom. We had a fantastic time watching her perform some of her best known poems.

September

Year 6 have had an amazing start to the year; we've appointed our new house captains (well done to everyone that put themselves forward) and have given out the roles and responsibilities that come with year 6.

We started the year off by looking at our whole school text 'The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish', where we explored the Arctic and investigated biomes. We also explored the work of Yayoi Kusama and, alongside the rest of the school, created an installation inspired by her.

Following this, we began our World War II topic, where we have explored the impact of the Treaty of Versailles and the causes of WWII.

In English, we began reading our class novel 'Friend or Foe', which is about two young boys who get evacuated during WWII. We're really enjoying it so far.

Our first topic in science is light, where we began by proving that light travels in straight lines.
