February
We finally completed our newspaper reports about Pandora's Box and have moved swiftly on to our next Greek myth; Theseus and the Minotaur. We are developing our powers of persuasion so that we can convince King Minos to allow his only son to battle the mighty Minotaur. So beware parents, you might find yourself being persuaded into allowing ice cream for breakfast!
To help with our understanding of the Ancient Greek civilisation, we enjoyed a thrilling visit from 'That History Bloke' who taught us lots of interesting facts and gave us access to a wide range of amazing artefacts to explore.
I maths we are using written methods to multiply and divide 4-digit numbers. I am sure you will see plenty of examples in the weekly homework.
January
It's all about the Ancient Greeks this term, and what better story to begin with than Pandora's Box. This exciting Greek myth stirred an interest amongst year 5 and they were eager to write up a newspaper report all about the traditional characters and their gruesome fates. In our mathematics lessons, we have been working hard to solve problems involving adding and subtracting fractions. This has been a difficult topic and the children have worked hard to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions.
Our Vex Go robots are progressing rapidly and some children have completed their robot ready for competitions. We will move onto coding the robots so that the children can complete tasks in the 'field'.
December
We have had a lovely month where we finished off our topic exploring the 1600s by learning lots about Samuel Pepys and why he is such a significant person. Everyone wrote a biography about him and learned that he wrote his diary in shorthand, at one point worked in the offices of George Downing (Downing Street in London is named after him) and that he survived to tell the tale of the plague and Great Fire of London. We also finished reading our book Fire, Fire! which has been really exciting!
We have worked very hard in our Vex Go computing lessons and some interesting robots are emerging.
Of course it was also party time this month and we had a lovely time over Christmas! Everyone is ready for a well-earned break before returning in the new year.
November
This month we visited the Philip Robinson library at Newcastle University for a 'Siege of Newcastle Workshop'. While there, we saw same amazing artefacts from the library's archives including first editions of Charles Dickens short stories and the signature of Queen Victoria. During the workshop we developed lots of historical knowledge and skills through exploring primary and secondary sources of evidence, sharing our ideas and making predictions. Everyone was given a small memento of the visit. Towards the end of the month we also had a visit in school from Jaz who is a representative of the North East Sikh Service. He was really friendly and told us about his faith as a Sikh and what this meant for his daily life.
October
At the start of this month, year 5 were part of a trip to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle to watch the Children's Bookshow. The poet Valerie Bloom performed poems, told stories and made sure everyone got involved demonstrating how much fun performance poetry can be. Some of her poems were funny whereas others made us think about how we treat others. Everyone was delighted that they received a free copy of Valerie's book 'Stars with Flaming Tails'. Valerie's performance demonstrated that writing doesn't need to be complicated and that we can write about anything at all!
And our art installations are really coming along nicely. We have even been creating out own interactive art installations in the classroom.
September
It has been a pleasure to welcome the children into Year 5 and we have certainly got off to an exciting start. In the first week, we all enjoyed exploring a book called ''The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish''; a book the entire school were focused on. During the second week, many of the children headed into the countryside for some 'rewilding' as part of a protected landscapes project (all of those pictures can be found on our school website), which provided an excellent opportunity for all those who attended.
In maths, we have started full steam ahead with place value and will be quickly moving onto addition and subtraction. The children have worked hard to order numbers to 1,000,000 and can identify the value of each digit in 6 digit numbers.
In English, we are using the book ''Fire Fire'' by Stuart Hill to enhance our English lessons and our understanding of the 1600s. The story tells of a young boy trapped in London when the Great Fire of London takes hold. We are using the fire as a context to write descriptively using similes and metaphors.
Children have also started their D&T projects, creating an art installation.
