  • Helping the Homeless

    Tue 31 Jan 2023

Ailana from the South Tyneside Crisp Packet Appeal came into school to work with us. We had collected lots of crisp packets and she showed us how we could use them to make waterproof blankets for the homeless. She also talked to us about recycling and helping the environment. We were all very proud of our efforts.

  • Strike Information

    Thu 26 Jan 2023

    Dear Parents/Carers,

You will be aware from media coverage and from the information which I sent you last week that the NEU teaching union have declared strike action, the first of which will take place on Wednesday 1st February. The strike is happening because of a national dispute between the unions and the government.

I’m getting in touch to give you as much notice as possible about our arrangements for 1st February only. Teaching staff are not all members of the same union, therefore, I must inform you that school will be closed for children who are in the following classes:

    Y2 Mrs Watson

    Y3/4S

    Y3/4M

    Y6S

    Y6W

Please note the 100% attendance of any child in any of the above classes will not be affected by not being in school that day.

If your child is not in any of the above classes they will attend school as usual. Breakfast Club and After School Clubs will also run as usual for all children who can attend school.

Remote Learning- The children have a number of passwords for a variety of programmes, such as Times Table Rockstars and Reading Plus, we would be very grateful if you could encourage them to log onto those programmes during the day.

If your child is entitled to a to Benefit Related Free School Meal, packed lunches will be available to be picked up from the school office at 12 o’ clock on the day of the strike. However, I am sure you will understand that they must be ordered so if you would a like a lunch provided for your child please complete and return the form below by Monday 30th January.

I’m sorry that you will have to make alternative arrangements for your child at short notice, and that they will experience disruption to their education. I understand that this situation may be frustrating, and ask that all members of our school community continue to treat each other with respect. We are working closely with our staff union representatives to keep up to date with the situation, and I will inform you as soon as possible if arrangements change further.

If you have any questions, please contact the office or send an email to the address listed at the top of this letter.

    Kind regards,

    Mrs McBeth

  • Letter from Mrs McBeth

    Fri 20 Jan 2023

    Friday 20th January

    Dear Parents/ Carers,

I hope you are all well and are surviving this cold weather!

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that Jarrow Cross has this week achieved the Gold Quality Mark for Religious Education. This award recognises the hard work and commitment to the teaching of RE over a period of many years. A huge thank you to Mrs Stavers for all of her hard work with our RE curriculum and the hard work she put into preparing for the assessment of this award.

You can see our new logo on our footer at the bottom of this page.

Regarding Mrs Stavers, I am sure that many of you are aware she will be beginning her maternity leave at the end of this half term (February 17th). Obviously we wish her well and cannot wait to meet the new arrival. After half term her class will be covered by Mrs Calder with whom all of the children are familiar. For your information both Mrs Stavers and Mrs Watson (Y6) will be holding their teacher/ parent discussions on Monday February 13th. Please watch out for a text or email which will contain a link enabling you to book.

Also we are holding a SAT’s information session for Year 6 parents on Wednesday 25th January at 3pm. During the session staff will discuss how parents can help their child on the lead up to the SAT’s Test. We would love to see as many of you there as possible.

I am sure that you will have read and heard this week about upcoming teacher strikes by the National Education Union (NEU)The information we have so far is that strike action will take place nationally and regionally. The dates which could affect South Tyneside are as follow:

    • Wednesday 1st February 2023- all eligible members in England and Wales
    • Tuesday 28th February 2023 – all eligible members in Northern, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber regions
    • Wednesday 15th March 2023 – all eligible members in England and Wales

    • Thursday 16th March 2023- all eligible members in England and Wales

At the moment I am unable to give you any details about how they will effect Jarrow Cross as we have been advised to await further information. However, I will ensure that you know about any possible closures as soon as possible.

    Have a good weekend,

    Mrs McBeth

  • It's Gold !

    Thu 19 Jan 2023

We are very proud to announce that Jarrow Cross has achieved the Quality Mark Gold Standard for the teaching of RE. The reward recognises the hard work and commitment to the teaching of RE over a period of many years. The Feedback from the assessor stated that :

'Pupils are knowledgeable and interested in RE and the RE curriculum
is well-planned and is supported by senior leaders and
governors. The subject leader is highly effective. She has a clear
vision for the subject, rooted in the needs of pupils and the
    profile of the local community.'

We are obviously delighted by this achievement and would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Stavers for all of her hard work.

  • I want to be ..... an engineer!

    Mon 16 Jan 2023

Year 1 had an engineer talk with them today about different building structures. The children were able to identify how shapes are used in different ways and could name shapes used on the Tyne bridge and the London Eye. They each created a pyramid, using only wooden dowells and elastic bands and then they had the  challenge to create bigger pyramids by joining all their pyramids together. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have now decided they all want to be engineers!

  • Happy New Year!

    Tue 10 Jan 2023

    Dear Parents,

I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas and I hope the new year has started well for you all.

Yesterday was certainly not the start of the year which we would have wanted and I thank you all for your patience. Thankfully the boiler is now working and long may this continue!

As always this term will be a busy one. We will be holding Parent/Teacher discussion sessions later in the term (more details to follow), we will be holding events in the lead up to Easter and of course children will be taking part in the usual educational visits and PE events. After School Clubs will also be starting within the next few weeks, brochures will be sent home ASAP.

Due to the generosity of so many of you before the Christmas break our Food Bank is well stocked and will be available to use as usual on Friday. We have also received the following information from the council which may be of help to families.

In respect of the impact of the Cost of Living Crisis on Children, Young People and their families please see the links below to local Warm Spaces and Food Banks

      Food Bank Links - https://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/article/1471/Food-banks

Can I remind parents if you wish your child to receive milk this term’s payments must be made by Friday 3rd February 2023.

Last term, as all schools, a lot of our children were unfortunately very poorly with a variety of illnesses. Although good attendance is clearly a priority for us and we are certainly hoping for a much healthier term, if your child is poorly with any flu like symptoms or tummy bugs please keep them at home.

    Kind Regards,

    Mrs McBeth
