  • Letter to Parents from Mrs McBeth 31.3.21

    Wed 31 Mar 2021

    Wednesday 31st March 2021

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I am writing to inform you of a slight change within the leadership of Jarrow Cross next term.

I have been asked to support as Headteacher at Simonside Primary School throughout the next term as their Headteacher is retiring on Thursday. This will be from Monday 19th April until Friday 23rd July 2021. I realise this is very short notice, but this is something which has only been discussed with myself and the Local Authority during the last week and is purely a short-term solution until their new Headteacher begins her role in a full time capacity in September.

The arrangement will be that I will spend two and a half days a week here at our school and two and half days a week at Simonside Primary. During the time I am at Simonside Mr Taggart will be Acting Head Teacher. I have no doubt as is always the case you will show him your full support.

If you any questions or queries regarding this, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, simply pop into the office or contact me by phone.

Thanks for your support with this.

    Kind Regards,

    Mrs McBeth

  • Letter to Parents from Mrs McBeth 26.3.21

    Fri 26 Mar 2021

    Friday 26th March 2021

    Dear Parents/ Carers,

I hope you are all well. I just want to take this opportunity to share with you various information in the lead up to the Easter holidays.

Firstly, Children who are entitled to Free School Meals will receive a voucher before the Easter holidays. This is a one off £25 voucher which has been funded from the council's Covid Winter Grant Scheme fund. We will contact you next week regarding picking up your vouchers from the school office.

Next week we will still be holding our Free Food Friday, but obviously as we finish school on Thursday it will take place on Thursday 1st April instead! It has been well restocked, and may be really helpful for the Easter holidays so please come along and fill a bag.

During the Easter Holidays the Council are providing many activities to keep everyone busy, including walking trails, brand new Easter holiday TV and recipe ideas to help keep families happy, healthy and entertained during the holidays. For more information, simply visit the South Tyneside Council Website and search Easter Holiday Club.

Finally, some lovely news to share with you. Our very own Miss Elcoate has been nominated in the #LoveSouthTynesideAwards in recognition of all her hard work in supporting our school community and beyond during the last year. I am sure that you will agree it is so well deserved and join with me in congratulating her. As you can imagine we are all ever so proud of her.

At the end of what has certainly been a difficult term draws to an end, can I again thank you for all of your support and here is hoping for a much brighter time ahead.

    Have a good weekend,

    Mrs McBeth

  • Letter to Parents from Mrs McBeth 12.3.21

    Fri 12 Mar 2021

    Friday 12th March 2021

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I am just writing to let you know what a lovely week we have had in school this week. It was just so amazing to see you all coming through the school gates on Monday morning. The children were obviously delighted to be back and to see all of their friends again. Obviously some of the children were a little nervous, but all children regardless if they had been at home or school during the lockdown, have all settled back into routine without any problem.

As promised there have been many opportunities for the children to work together in games and group tasks this week which the children have all thoroughly enjoyed. A firm favourite seems to have been The Escape Room Maths activities and games of Bingo!

Next Friday 19th March is Comic Relief. Red Noses will be available for sale on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th for the cost of £1.50 each. We have enough for one per child only. For obvious reasons can you please advise the children not to share their red nose with others. To get into the spirit children can also wear something red to school other than their school uniform, this is purely optional and there is no additional cost for this. There will be jokes and fun activities taking place throughout the school day.

Just for your information if you wish your family to take part in Lateral Flow Testing, packs are available for collection from Jarrow Library between 1pm and 8pm each day. Please note Public Health advice is not to attend the centre if you are showing any kind of COVID symptoms.

Other information, as part of the Covid Winter Voucher scheme all families who are entitled to Benefit Related Free School Meals will be receiving a £25 voucher per child. These vouchers will be issued in the same way as the half term vouchers and will be available to be picked up from school prior to the Easter Holidays.

Over the last few weeks Our Free Food Friday has been a great success, we are now however, running short on staple items such as tins and pasta. Any donations would be very gratefully received, simply pop them into the box at the main office. Thank you.

In the next few weeks’ teachers will begin to remind you of homework and other weekly expectations. I know you will continue to support your child to keep up to date with all of the normal expectations.

Thank you again for the way in which you have supported your child during the last week. Have a lovely weekend.

  • Letter to Parents from Mrs McBeth 5.3.21

    Fri 05 Mar 2021

    Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope the final week of home schooling has gone well and you are all looking forward to next Monday.

Thank you very much for completing our parental questionnaires, the results have been invaluable in helping us to plan for the forthcoming weeks.

Many of you mentioned concerns around social distancing at the beginning and the end of the school day.

As I mentioned previously we will continue to stagger the school day to minimise the amount of people on the school site. However, to make these times of day as safe as possible we ask that you please:

    • ensure you are following social distance protocols (do not huddle in groups)
    • using the correct entrances and exits. Please respect members of staff directing at gates
    • wear a mask on entry to the school grounds
    • only one adult per family pick up children (this does not include younger children)
    • do not send your child into school if they are showing any of the common Covid symptoms
    • do not send a child into school if a close family member is showing symptoms (wait for a negative test result before return)

    Other measures in place

    • Since January, schools have been involved in a national effort to test staff for Covid-19. The aim being to identify asymptomatic people and ensure they self isolate.
    • Twice-weekly asymptomatic testing has taken place at Jarrow Cross whilst the staff continued to work with the children attending school throughout lockdown. This will continue until we are told by the government that testing is no longer necessary.
    • Children remain in bubbles to reduce the risk of mixing
    • Enhanced cleaning
    • Good ventilation
    • All children will continue to be encouraged to follow the ‘Catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach as well as completing regular hand washing and use of sanitiser.
    • Up to date risk assessment available on school website

It is clear from the questionnaire results that one of the main concerns regarding the children’s return to school is emotional wellbeing. Please be assured that we have taken this into account and our priority next week will be to ensure the children have many opportunities to socialise and interact with one another as we also know that the thing the children are looking forward to most is being back with their friends. We also have organised a Silly Science workshop which we know all of the children will enjoy.

However, also understandably many of you were also concerned about academic progress and gaps in learning. Again this will be addressed over the forthcoming weeks. Staff have priority areas that will be covered within the Literacy and Numeracy curriculum, children will continue to be informally assessed and as always targeted support and intervention put in place to support children’s learning.

Many of you will be aware that roadworks have been taking place over the last few weeks at the Borough Road, Springwell Road exit. Borough Road is now one way only with entry via Croft Terrace. Although we realise this will hopefully help with traffic problems on Borough Road it will make Croft Terrace extremely busy. We do understand walking to school is not possible for everyone, however we would strongly advise to ease congestion and for safety around the school area that whenever possible walking would be a far better and safer option.

PE will continue next week and as usual children will come to school in their PE kit on their PE day.

    See below as a reminder:

Monday –Year 2S and Year 2W Year 6S

Tuesday -Year 1W and Year 1R Year 4/5E

    Wednesday – Year 4/5T Year 6W

    Thursday -  Reception P and Reception W Year 3H and Year 3M

    Friday- Year 4/5G

I would just like to finish by firstly thanking you for all of your hard work with the children throughout the last term. The way in which you have all supported your children’s learning through a difficult and often stressful time has been nothing short of amazing. Also, I must again thank you for the support you have given to myself and the staff, it has meant so much to us and truly helped through some difficult periods. The cakes and biscuits especially have been extremely appreciated! The way in which the Jarrow Cross Community has again worked together is testament to you all. We are so looking forward to Monday and having our whole school community back together again.

Have a lovely weekend and thank you again.

Take care and I will see you all very soon,

    Mrs McBeth
