  • BBC Ones “Eat Well For Less?”

    Wed 30 Jun 2021

    Hello,

I am writing from the hit BBC One prime time series Eat Well For Less? – I hope you’re well!

My reason for writing is that we are currently casting for our 8th series and are looking for families / households who would like to eat well and save some money on their weekly shop. We would love it if you would be willing to tell us about some people you know that may be suitable for the show? I’ve popped some information about the series below for you…

“The show is on a mission to prove that it is possible for families and households to save money on their food budget without scrimping on taste and nutrition.  We hope that by analysing the shopping habits of UK families, we can help to show where they can source the best and cheapest quality food.”

Eating well and to a budget is something we feel affects most of us and we’d be really grateful if you could help us spread the word about the new series by perhaps circulating a flyer with parents and staff at your school or by sharing something on a public notice board or school newsletter? I have attached a copy of the flyer to this email and we can also post paper copies out to you if you would prefer.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the series or if you require any further information and I’ll be more than happy to help.

Hope to hear from you soon!

    Many thanks,

  • Letter to Parents from Mrs McBeth 25.6.21

    Fri 25 Jun 2021

                                                                                                                                       Friday 25th June 2021

    Dear Parents/Carers

I hope you are all well. I cannot quite believe we now only have four weeks left until our summer holidays, therefore as the end of term quickly approaches here are a few pieces of important information.

Firstly, some good news. Our entry for the Better Energy at Schools Award was highly commended.

A big thank you to Mrs Holt for her hard work with this project. Better Energy at Schools stated:

“Many congratulations to everyone at Jarrow Cross Primary C of E School on being Highly Commended for your project 'Plastic Oceans' in the Better Energy School Awards 2021! In an incredibly challenging year for schools, we still received entries from over 13,000 children, so being selected to win an Award is a real achievement, especially as standards remained very high this year.” We loved your recycled artwork highlighting the dangers of plastic pollution!  The educational display of local wildlife was great too.

School reports will be sent out to all pupils on Friday 2nd July. Alongside the report will be your child’s attendance and also an invitation providing the opportunity to discuss your child’s report with their class teacher.

Unfortunately, due to the rise in COVID cases we have had to take the decision that we will not be able to invite parents to end of term events. This includes Sports Day. I am sure you will understand that whist the transmission rates of the new Delta variant increase our priority is to keep our school community safe and hopefully ensure that no one is required to isolate at the beginning of the school holidays. Please be assured that the children will still participate in a Sports Day but it will be held in Year Group Bubbles with all of the usual COVID regulations in place. We will be in touch with dates for each year group.

Dates for your diary- You may have heard about an extra Bank Holiday next year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It has been decided by the Local Authority that schools will close on May 27th 2020 to celebrate this event. For your information our INSET Days for the academic year 2021/2022 are Monday 6th September, 4th January and 6th June.

Thank you to all of you who have continued to donate to our Free Food Friday over the last few months. With the summer holidays fast approaching we would be grateful for any donations, as we will be encouraging families to make good use of the facility before school closes.

Please remember if you are wanting to order school uniform before September we have very limited stock in school but it can be ordered from www.totstoteams.com

    Have a good weekend,

    Mrs McBeth

  • KS2 Athletics Festival

    Fri 18 Jun 2021

We had a fantastic morning at Monkton Stadium for our Athletics Festival. We had 4 activities that we took part in and we all did brilliantly.

We first of all had to run 75 m in groups of 4. Our times were all taken and the points will be allocated by the super Sports Ambassadors from Boldon Comp.

After that, we had to throw the howler. That's a fat rubber dart like missile with fins made from rubber and 'howls' when you throw it. Again, the points will be added up for this, too.

Following that, we had a 400m race and that was quite tricky, but we all tried our very best and we all had a sprint to finish line. A massive shout out to Lilly who came first in that race with an amazing time of 1 minute and 20 seconds! Well done, Lilly!

Our last activity was a standing start jump. We used our arms to help propel us forward and jump a really long way!

Phew! We were all tired but happy after this and I'm sure that after the points are counted that we'll have done extremely well.

  • Key Information – PSHCE Updated Curriculum

    Thu 17 Jun 2021

    Wednesday 16th June 2021

    Dear Parent/Carer,

As a part of your child’s education at Jarrow Cross C of E Primary School, we have always promoted personal wellbeing and development through a comprehensive programme of PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education). The aim of PSHCE being to ensure our students gain the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live safely and healthily.

I am writing to inform you that as of Summer 2021, under the Relationships, Sex Education and Health Education (England) Regulations 2019, made under sections 34 and 35 of the Children and Social Work Act 2017, Relationship and Health Education is now compulsory for all pupils in primary education. We are confident you will share our enthusiasm for this inclusion in our PSHCE curriculum, as we feel it will educate our children further about staying safe and healthy.

Please be assured that Relationship and Sex education lessons (RSE) are age appropriate and will include discussions around: healthy relationships; families; growing and changing including puberty; personal hygiene; changing feelings; becoming more independent; keeping safe and consent; and developing self-esteem and confidence. As a parent, you have the right to withdraw your child from any aspects of Sex Education that goes beyond the statutory Science curriculum. However, a decision has been made at Jarrow Cross that we will only teach the statutory curriculum. Therefore, the option of withdrawal in this instance does not apply.

It is important that children are aware of the correct/factual terminology for parts of their body. This also links directly to the science curriculum; therefore, staff will inform the children of the correct, scientific terminology for all body parts including private parts, during specific taught science lessons. Please see the PowerPoint described below for further details.

All PSHCE topics will be delivered by teaching staff on a weekly basis. As stated above, the subjects will be taught in an age-appropriate manner and as always in a safe environment providing the children with opportunities to ask questions.

As unfortunately at the moment we are still unable to invite parents into school, we have created a section on our school website, Key Information – PSHCE Updated curriculum which we would encourage you all to visit. Further information-including the content session overviews- and a PowerPoint relating to this subject can also be found there. We would really value your opinions regarding our PSHCE Curriculum and we will be sending out a survey asking for your views and feedback. Please watch out for the link which will be sent via text next week.

In the meantime, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to get in touch with either myself or Miss Elcoate PSHCE Co-ordinator.

    Thank you,

    Mrs McBeth and Miss Elcoate

  • Updated information from Public Health on the new Delta Variant

    Wed 16 Jun 2021

                                                                                          Monday 14th June 2021

    Dear Parent/Carer,

I have received new guidance from Public Health and feel it important to pass it on to you.

    School Update – June 2021

I’m sure you’ll already be aware that a COVID-19 variant of concern has been confirmed within our region. The variant, first discovered in India and now named ‘Delta’ by the World Health Organisation, does not appear to cause more severe illness than other strains and thankfully, the number of overall cases remains relatively low.

Early evidence suggests this variant transmits more easily than other variants circulating in the UK but there is currently no evidence to suggest it is more resistant to vaccination.

Schools and businesses across our region and in South Tyneside have been affected by small, localised outbreaks and as we know from previous experience, this is likely to result in spread among the wider community.

This means that an outbreak in school amongst staff or pupils is likely to affect more people than before, increasing the risk of disruption to our schoolchildren.

I’m writing to ask for your help in keeping the infection rate in South Tyneside low. There are keyways to protect yourself, your school and the wider community:

    Vaccination

Vaccines remain the best protection we have against COVID-19, including this variant.

The vaccination programme is progressing quickly, with younger groups becoming eligible every few days.

Please get your vaccine as soon as possible. The more people who are vaccinated, the harder it is for the virus to spread and to ultimately reach those who are vulnerable.

Appointments can be booked by calling 119 or at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/coronavirus-vaccine/

    Testing

Around 1 in 3 people with COVID-19 don’t have any symptoms, so all adults and secondary school age pupils are encouraged to carry out testing twice a week. This helps identify individuals who could be spreading the virus without realising.

Just to remind you that all parents and carers that they can collect free lateral flow testing kits from pharmacies and local community sites, or order online or by phone for home delivery.

It’s also important that the test results – whether positive or negative – are reported to the NHS and not just the school so that the spread of the virus can be monitored. I would therefore encourage you to remind parents and carers to report online at www.gov.uk/report-covid19-results

PCR tests are more reliable than lateral flow tests, so anyone who develops symptoms – no matter how mild – should arrange a PCR test straight away.

You’ll be aware that the guidance recently changed just before half-term and now all close contacts of positive cases are asked to book a PCR test as soon as possible to try to stop the spread of the more transmissible variants.

Again, it’s vital that close contacts continue to isolate for 10 days even if they have a negative PCR test.

    COVID-Secure Schools

This strain of the virus is no different from any other in that it is more likely to spread in enclosed areas used by lots of people.

Despite the change in guidance for schools on the use of face coverings, discretion may be needed in the case of schools where there are outbreaks, local cases increase or where variants of concern have been identified. In any of those instances Public Health will review the situation and may recommend the reintroduction of face coverings as an additional public health measure. Additionally, if parents and carers are coming into the school yard and not social distancing adequately, they will be asked to use face coverings on these occasions to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Finally, I want to thank you all for your continued efforts in helping to ensure our schools stay open and our pupils continue to get the best education possible.

    Yours sincerely

    Tom Hall

    Director of Public Health
